East Central Wisconsin continues to hover in the transition zone between the last days of ice fishing and the first days of open water activity. The continued warm weather spell is expected to last past Saint Patrick ’s Day and should provide some earlier than normal boat traffic on both the Fox and Wolf Rivers. The ice bridges on the main lake have been pulled in all areas, and travel on the ice is highly discouraged for safety’s sake.
There is very little to report currently. The Wolf River has started to open up and some areas are as much as 90% ice free, especially near Fremont.
De Pere (Fox River) is open and heavy boat traffic is in the general area. The boat launch was parked shut last weekend already. I visited the docks and talked to many fishermen which indicated the bite was extremely slow for the most part. The walleyes found have been in the shallow areas of the river, and is consistent with pre spawn movements. Look for the soon to be migrating fish to be in the slack water areas to avoid the current. The water current in De Pere has been light so far this year, and had featured very clear water conditions. That changed rapidly this weekend when the rain water runoff, muddied the water and added some decent flow. There is still some ice in the river as of Saturday night.
The Eureka Dam area now has open water and an open boat dock. Just a few walleyes are being reported.
We plan to get the water temperature module back on the page this week. This will monitor the area water temps to clue you in to ideal conditions for your next trip. We also have reinstated the Wolf River Cam on the main page so you can watch the fish move up stream via the underwater camera. I am out of commission currently, having major surgery this past week, and should be on the pond in about 5 weeks.
