Reports Lake Winnebago, WI Winnebago Weekly 10-24-11

Winnebago Weekly 10-24-11

What a difference a couple of days make!  Outside temperatures have plummeted nearly 30 degrees on average from the past week, and fall has official arrived.  Water temperatures have dropped into the low 50’s, with some early mornings reaching into the upper 40’s.  The main lake has a pea green appearance in many areas.

The past weeks have offered very few opportunities for fishermen to find quality conditions.  Winds and other inclement weather have dwindled the number of anglers on the water. Only a few reports were filtered to me this week; plus I was in Europe, so I saw no time on the water.  Therefore this will be a very brief report.

For Walleyes:  Look to the rivers.  Both the Fox and Wolf Rivers continue to produce quality walleyes which have moved into the rivers in heavier concentrations.  Check your April/Springtime spots to see who might be hanging around.  Green has been dominating color for the jig.  Tip the jig with either a large minnow or plastic(s).   On the main lake try shallow, warm water by hand trolling along rocky reefs.

For Perch:  There is still solid numbers of perch being caught.  They continue to move toward shallower areas, as they prepare for winter.  Small minnows have been the bait of choice.  The best area remains near Fisherman’s road.

For White Bass:  Pumping flies in the river is a productive method.  Casted cranks can be fun, if a school is located.

Remember, De Pere (Upper Fox River) will have a good walleye bite starting soon.  It is too early to winterize your boat!  Speaking of which, be sure to give either the Boat Doc in Lomira, or Wendt’s in Van Dyne a call for your winterizing needs.  Stay warm, and get on the water at least one more time!
