2011 is just about over, Where is ”our” ice on Lake Winnebago, Lake Poygan and other area lakes? Ice Anglers are going stir crazy as this has been a long dry spell for most of us.
I have developed several tactics which might bring ice to Lake Winnebago sooner than sitting and waiting for it. Here are my top 10 suggestions:
1. Go to the local city park adjacent to Lake Winnebago (I suggest Lakeside Park in Fond du Lac, or Menominee Park in Oshkosh) and meanly stare at the open water, until it gets the message to freeze over.
2. Sell your snow blower. Once it is sold, winter is sure to make an appearance since you are now unprepared.
3. Book a fishing stay-cation. Every time I book a fishing vacation, the weather is horrible.
4. Visit area hockey arenas. If you can’t have ice to fish upon, at least you can condition yourself to cold environment in preparation when winter finally does arrive.
5. Buy a swim suit and expect to use it. That will make the weather turn for the worst without fail.
6. Recall your local weatherman.
7. If you have unlimited funds, leave your refrigerator/freezer door in the open position.
8. Develop an ice shack, built with pontoons, that floats.
9. Do a load of laundry. For many “guys” hell would have to freeze over to make this happen.
10. Place a kiddie pool (with a fish design) in your front yard. Fill with a thin layer of water, and wait for it to freeze. Be careful not to puncture with the power auger when drilling holes to fish.
Happy Holidays!
