Sturgeon Season 2012

Sturgeon Spearing Season Update

Poor water clarity results in poor harvest this weekend

Despite fairly good spearer activity on the ice today, success was limited to only a few areas on the lake, primarily the west shore. Only 1 of the 23 fish registered today was brought in on the east or north shores of the lake. The other 22 fish were registered on the west shore with the most at Wendt's, Van Dyne (8), then 7 at Payne's Point Tavern, Neenah, and 5 at Jerry's Bar, Oshkosh. Late this morning and early this afternoon quite a few shanties were seen moving south and west possibly to cut in along the west shore where the action for most of the season has been the most consistent. Ice conditions are holding but spearers report cracks on the lake that need to be watched for and some of the landings took a beating this weekend with the higher spearer and joy-rider traffic.

Ditto from yesterday: Another slow day with very low effort resulting in the same daily harvest - 17 fish. A fair amount of shack movement as spearers search for happier hunting grounds on better ice. The warm weather and vehicle traffic is beating up some of the landings spearers are using going on to the ice. Most spearers say if the ice holds they expect to see effort (and harvest) ramping up towards the weekend.
